Make Polluters Pay Advocacy Day

Our communities are paying the price for Big Oil’s climate disasters. Our neighbors are losing their homes, and sometimes even their lives, to wildfires, floods, and extreme heat. Cities and states are spending billions to respond to nonstop climate disasters and extreme weather events. But instead of paying their fare share for the damage they’ve caused, global fossil fuel companies continue to rake in massive profits at our expense. It’s time they’re held accountable.

Join Beyond Toxics and the Make Polluters Pay Coalition for a Day of Advocacy! We will train you on how to talk with lawmakers about the Climate Resilience Superfund and share your personal story, then you and other community members will get to meet with lawmakers at the Capitol.

This will be an all-day event in Salem. A light breakfast, lunch, and snacks will be provided.

FERNS Pesticide Map Webinar

We recently launched a brand-new, one-of-a-kind tool: an interactive webmap for exploring historical pesticide applications in Oregon from 2014-2024. Beyond Toxics offers support and resources for those affected by pesticide drift, but there has been a persistent unmet need for greater transparency in historical pesticide usage across the state.

Join Beyond Toxics for a FREE volunteer training! We’ll hear from Beyond Toxics staff about ways you can volunteer with us, upcoming advocacy opportunities, and how you can support our resilience work around nutrition and local food access.

Beyond Toxics has worked closely with Valley Neighbors for Environmental Quality and Safety (VNEQS) throughout the fight against the proposed Coffin Butte landfill expansion. Bulk Handling Systems (BHS) Tour & Eugene Environmental Film Festival

Join Beyond Toxics, Lane County Public Works, BRING Recycling, and Bulk Handling Systems to rethink waste management at the Eugene Environmental Film Festival!

BHS is a Eugene-based manufacturer of AI and Robotic Recycling systems. We will have an on-site tour of their facility that is not typically open to the public. This is a unique opportunity to step inside a local manufacturer and learn how AI and Robotics will be used at facilities like the Lane County CleanLane Resource Recovery Facility. Hear from BHS CEO Steve Miller, who will present about these systems in action. BHS Robotics, AI, and industrial equipment will be on display for visitors to see.

Then join us that same evening at 6 p.m. to view inspiring short films about improving our solid waste systems across the globe! After viewing the films, visiting filmmakers will share what inspires their creative process and passion for improving the environment. The evening will conclude with a panel of local Lane County experts working everyday to bring us closer to a zero waste economy.

Amicus Memorial Garden Work Parties and Conversation Circles

Join Beyond Toxics’ Eric Richardson for weekly conversation circles and work parties at the Amicus Memorial Garden Collective. We’ll come together each week to get outside and build community.

Beyond Toxics is partnered with Nurturely, Square One Villages, NAACP, and Upper Willamette Soil and Water conservation District.

Who: All are welcome!

When: Weekly Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. Work parties are 5 to 6 p.m., followed by facilitated conversation circles from 6 to 7 p.m.

Coffin Butte Expansion Planning Commission Deliberations

The Benton County Planning Commission is approaching a final decision on the proposed Coffin Butte Landfill expansion. There is a deliberation meeting before the adoption of the final decision. The meeting is open to the public to attend both in-person and virtually, though they will not be hearing new testimony.

This is a great opportunity to show up, pack the room, and remind the Planning Commission that the community does not want or support this expansion!

End of Summer Resilience Fair

SquareOne, an affordable housing nonprofit, recently purchased Our Redeemer Lutheran Church to convert the property into housing. To celebrate, we’re hosting a bonus resilience fair with SquareOne and Nurturely!

There will be free organic produce, a free community barbeque, kids’ corner, and community resource tabling. You can learn about local resources for healthy living and make connections with local environmental justice and health advocates.

Community Resilience Market

Starting Saturday, June 28, Beyond Toxics will be hosting a FREE farmers market where community members can pick up produce and other food goods. Resilience Markets will be every second and fourth Saturday, running until October 25.

Beyond Toxics is grateful to be supported by Upper Willamette Soil and Water conservation District!

Who: All are welcome!

When: Second and fourth Saturday each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Markets are on June 28, July 12 & 26, August 9 & 23, September 13 & 27, October 11 & 25.

Pollinator & Garden Work Party

Join Beyond Toxics and our partner organizations in the maintenance of the pollinator patch and other community spaces at Plaza de Nuestra Comunidad’s Churchill Community Garden!

Projects include: weeding, watering, and installing bilingual signage in the pollinator patch.

Tools, supplies, and lunch provided.

Who: This event is open to all! If you like being in the garden, come join us!

When: Thursday July 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: Churchill Community Garden, 2200 Bailey Hill Rd, Eugene, OR 97405. Please park at Kennedy Middle School and walk downhill, past the chainlink fence, until you see the garden.

Westmoreland Park Work Party

Come join neighbors and community members to support the City Parks Department in managing riparian areas at Westmoreland Park with non-chemical stewardship practices!

We’ll be removing invasive and unwanted vegetation to support the health of the park and its native flora.

Coffin Butte Landfill Community Events

Republic Services appealed the Coffin Butte expansion decision. Wondering what’s happening now and what comes next?

The landfill is still under investigation by the EPA, a new air permit is being drafted by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, and their expansion appeal is in process. Coffin Butte Landfill is an enormous financial and environmental liability to Benton County, but without knowing the larger landscape of waste management options, it can be hard to know what to do.

Join Beyond Toxics and VNEQS at an upcoming community meeting to learn more about current landfill developments and future opportunities in sustainable waste management alternatives. In these community meetings, we will discuss the larger picture of waste management in Oregon, what is currently happening at Coffin Butte, and will offer testimony support in anticipations of upcoming hearings.

Resiliency Walk at Mt. Pisgah

Join Beyond Toxics, Nurturely, and naturalists from Mt. Pisgah Arboretum as we walk together and learn about local pollinators. Come connect with other parents while guided through a beautiful local environment!

We will meet in the education building where there will be a baby carrying demo and you can pick up a free parking pass before we hit the trail!
